This series is a cross between speculative fiction and mystery. It's a lot of fun but exposition-heavy. It's especially fun if you're a book nerd, since the characters do a lot of leaping in and out of famous works of fiction. The rules and quirks of Fforde's universe are myriad, however, and they all need explaining, so it ends up being exhausting instead of charming. Also, I had trouble keeping track of the numerous second-tier characters. I do want to know what happens to Agent Next, so I'll probably read the next installment of the series.
